Complete body off restored true 1971 Chevelle SS. With factory original Cortez silver paint with black SS stripes and correct LS5 454 big block with a 4-speed manual trans and 12 bolt rear end. This car was loaded with all options you could want when it was new. Finding a real deal 71 SS with the legendary LS 5 454 big block is very rare, finding a car that's super solid. All restored and in its original factory color is even rarer. This car is all correct and its options original to the car. The complete drive train is correct for the car (LS 5) and completely rebuild.
1971 Was the last year for the factory Performance 454 big blocks as from 1972 performance figures dropped because of emission control and the fuel crisis. The car was originally an automatic car, but it was converted to a very desirable 4 speed with all the correct factory components and original gear. No aftermarket stuff on this car !. This means the car will have even more rear wheel HP as automatics can loose up to 35% or more of there crank HP than any manual trans car. Besides that, a 4-speed car is just a bit more fun to drive and fool around with.
In 1971 the base Chevelle was a straight 6 cylinder, followed by the 302 and 350 small block engine's, but in the end, all these engines didn't perform very well in these heavy muscle car. And although every model could be had with the SS package, the only true muscle cars were the Chevelle's with a Big block as the didn't only have more HP. but more importantly, the had tons of torque. With the LS6 454 no longer available in 1971, there were only 2 other options, the base 402 ( marked as a 396) and the famous LS5 454 that this car is equipped with. So the LS 5 454 was the most expensive and highest HP output car Chevy had to offer and was only for sale with an obligated SS package, as were the base 302/350 small block models could be ordered separately with them as well.
This rare LS 5 Chevelle was not only the best money could buy in 1971, but its also equipped with every possible performance options you could want, and in the ultra-cool Cortez (or Nevada) silver metallic paint with the black SS stripes, the factory SS wheels and Cowl induction hood, this monster was one of the worst and fastest Chevy's on the streets back in 1971. Seeing even the Camaro's highest output engine was with the Z28 and the 396 SS, this car was the absolute best performance muscle car in the Chevy brand. This particular Chevelle SS had a price tag of more than 4700 USD which was a staggering 2000 USD MORE than the price of a Base Chevelle V8!
The 71 model was almost the same as the 70, but with a different and we feel better-looking tail section with the dual round rear headlights and a different front, but the general design was the same. The coupe still had that muscle car looking sleek body with bulky looking fenders and the cool cowl induction hood as standard on the LS5 , or optional on other model SS cars. The best combination for most of us is to have the car with the nose section of the '70 cars and the tail section of the 71, but we do like both cars just as much, seeing the both have something that speaks for each model year.
There amazing looking cars that drive very smooth and with the 454 versions are also very fast and powerful cars with loads of torque. And although the LS6 (1970 model year only) 454 with its 450hp rating might have been the most powerful Chevy engine in those days, the LS5, however, was a true performance engine as well and many feel that the run much smoother and it was estimated by many car journalists that it was underrated by the factory and the felt it had closer to 400hp and also higher torque. And in the 0-60mph ratings, both cars were almost just as fast with only a minor difference. Furthermore, the LS6 engine was a solid lifter, high lift cammed, and higher compression engine than the LS5 and the had the tendency to break down as they were more race than street car engines. Another downside was that the LS6 had way more mechanical noise and was nervous at idling.
So, in the end, the LS5 454 was smoother and almost just as fast as the LS6. But we all know that the LS6 cars are way more expensive in today's markets and that's mainly because they're rarer and just have that 450hp decal on the air filter so these cars just have the image and the bragging rights for having the highest HP rating back in the day's. With prices for an LS6 Chevelle in good condition going way over 150k, the 71 LS5 is for most the better buy although prices of a real LS5 car are rising fast as well and we have seen them for sale close to 100k already as well.
This 1971 Chevelle is one of the last true Musclecar's of the 70's as from 1972, the last LS5 454 model year, the HP ratings dropped to 260HP as due to environmental restrictions, and as from 1973, no Chevelle could be ordered with a factory 454 big block at all. So this car we show here, besides its amazing condition and quality, color combination and options is, in fact, one of the last icon's produced. Its very collectible and a super solid investment also as prices keep rising and rising as never before.
The price we ask for this completely restored car is a fraction of what was invested in its restoration alone, so don't hesitate too long as it might well be one of the best deals you will find in the market today. You cant even restore a car like this for less than our asking price alone! The car comes with a very rare factory build sheet to prove that this is NOT a clone as most Chevelle's are, but a True LS5 454 SS car. The car was completely restored and the engine and driveline rebuild, the body is rust free and it has brand new paint and a correct and highly detailed underside. The complete interior was also restored and so was the dash and the SS gauge cluster with its factory tacho. No flaws here and everything works as should. Its an amazing looking car in this awesome and rare Cortez silver color.
